Seg\u00fan el ministro de Defensa, Ernesto Justiniano, la primera explosi\u00f3n fue por p\u00f3lvora negra de material pirot\u00e9cnico almacenado. La segunda fue de mayor gravedad y a\u00fan se desconoce su origen. El comandante del Ej\u00e9rcito, H\u00e9ctor Alarc\u00f3n, precis\u00f3 que no fue en instalaciones operativas, sino en el Centro General de Mantenimiento de Material B\u00e9lico, donde hab\u00eda boosters y retardos usados en miner\u00eda.El jefe militar revel\u00f3 que ese d\u00eda el cuartel ten\u00eda menos personal porque instructores y soldados estaban en una \u00abmarcha de bicicletas\u00bb al cerro de Letan\u00edas. \u00abGracias a Dios, esta actividad recreacional ha permitido que la cantidad de v\u00edctimas se reduzca significativamente\u00bb, afirm\u00f3.
